Scholarship Program Hits $1 Million Mark
Since its inception, the Frozen Food Industry Memorial Scholarship Foundation has provided financial assistance to more than 700 students preparing for careers in the food industry at 24 participating colleges and universities. Contributions for 2004 totaled $67,875. Total contributions received since the fundraising drive was launched in 1966 equal $1,005,100. Click here for more details on the Scholarship Fund.

Now that the 2005 March National Frozen Food Month promotion has come to a close, it’s time to begin compiling your results for entry into the Golden Penguin Awards Competition. Golden Penguin winners will be nationally recognized at a special Awards Reception and Banquet at the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Convention in San Francisco, CA. Robert J. Gruber, former President of Blue Water Seafoods, passed away on March 21, 2005 at the age of 97. Gruber was the first to introduce frozen fish portions, uniformly shaped sections cut from a fish block and marketed in raw breaded rather than pre-cooked form. In honor of his distinguished accomplishments, Gruber was inducted into the Frozen Food Hall of Fame in 2002.

Unified Western Grocers, Inc. recently elected Louis A. Amen, President, Super A Foods, Inc. Los Angeles as Chairman of the Board. Amen, who served as Unified’s Chairman of the Board from 1999 to 2004, succeeds Kevin Davis, President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Bristol Farms Markets, Carson, CA, who did not continue as director.

Ruiz Foods Inc. recently broke ground on a $40 million expansion of its plant in Dinuba, CA that is expected to double production to six million burritos a day for the maker of frozen Mexican foods. The National Restaurant Association recently announced the expansion of its global presence through the International Cuisine Pavilion, an innovative new feature to be unveiled at the 2005 Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show to be held in May at McCormick Place in Chicago. SYSCO Corporation recently announced plans to extend its distribution coverage in Alabama by opening a new broadline distribution company. Located on a 49-acre site on Alabama Route 52-Geneva. The company will create 227 new jobs and could employ up to 800 people as sales grow. The new company to be named Sysco Food Services-Gulf Coast, Inc. is expected to open in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2005 following modifications to meet SYSCO’s requirements.
