The new NFRA Chairman and Board were elected October 15th at the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Convention Board Meeting.

Eastern Frosted Foods has announced the induction of a scholarship fund in honor of Frank Ferrari, a veteran of the frozen food industry who recently passed away. All proceeds from the EFFA’s 70th Anniversary Dinner are being placed in the “Frank Ferrari Memorial Scholarship Fund” under the EFFA Foundation, a full charity organization. The editors of Supermarket News have chosen Safeway, Pleasanton, California, as the 2007 recipient of the SN Retail Excellence Award. Safeway was cited for its leadership in lifestyle format; designing the Ingredients for Life campaign; its proprietary lines, including O Organics and Eating Right; and the Blackhawk Network third-party gift card business, among other initiatives. The choice of Safeway was partly based on industry nominations received by SN. The award was presented October 23rd at the Food Industry Leadership Center Executive Forum in Portland, Oregon.

Gourmet Express recently announced that it had entered into a binding agreement with Ilex Capital, a private-equity group based in Annapolis, Maryland to sell a majority share. This transaction is expected to close in December 2007. Gourmet Express is a leader in the fast-growing “skillet meal” frozen food category, sold under its Gourmet Dining private label as well as to private-label customers, including major US retailers and warehouse stores. Unified Grocers announced recently that it has completed the acquisition of Associated Grocers, Inc. The total purchase price for the transaction was $38.5 million, although this figure is subject to customary post-closing adjustments for 45 days after the September 30th closed transaction. Coincident to the transaction, Unified obtained new supply agreements from the vast majority of AG’s existing customer base of grocery retailers, and also assumed certain existing supply agreements between AG and other retail customers, including an existing agreement with Haggen Food & Pharmacy and TOP Food & Drug, a 33-store chain with operations in Washington and Oregon.
